Homemade Floating Boat

ShayMadden December 27, 2018

In sixth grade, we were learning the properties of floatation. Our science lab teacher, Mr. Huffin, told us to create a device made from household materials that can float on water. I researched multiple websites and finally made a mini boat that could float on water.

Materials Used

  1. Hammer
  2. 2 long nails
  3. Small, thin wood strip
  4. Piece of wood approximately
  5. 4” by 3” Large flat rubber band
  6. Piece of sandpaper

  1. If necessary, sand your wood scraps until they are smooth.
  2. Hold the 4" by 3" piece of wood & carefully hammer the nails into each end of the wood piece, spacing them as widely apart as possible.
  3. Thread the rubber band over the nails so that it loops over each nail twice.
  4. Place the small wood strip between the two lengths of rubber band.
  5. Make sure that it extends beyond the ends of the nails.
  6. Turn the small wood strip (the paddle) to wind the rubber band tightly.
  7. Release your boat and watch it float on the water
